Kids to Coast 2011The 2011 Kids to Coast was a study tour to the Gold Coast filled with education, sports activities and ‘first time’ experiences. 10 of the top students from Mutitjulu School participated in the 4 day tour.
Kids to Coast Mutitjulu was designed based on the expressed need by the Community itself, to offer their youth an experience reaching further from their society, with an aim to improve education.
The Hooker Family Foundation has been working with Mutitjulu Community School from 2011 – 2013, facilitating major incentive activities to boost student education, school attendance rates while creating a more extensive educational experience.
First Surf & Beach Experience
A day at the beach with the Nippers from the Tallebudgera Surf Life Saving Club, learning about the beach culture, swimming and surf life saving.
Meeting the Gold Coast Titans, students experienced what a day of training looks like for the famous Queensland rugby team. They were introduced to the famous players Preston Campbell and Scott Prince.
Marine Life Experience
The kids visited Sea World on the Gold Coast led by a marine biologist for an education on marine life mammals and fish.
First Boating Experience
The students finished their trip with their first ever boat experience with the Super Duck Adventure Tour.
Video aired on Qantas in-flight media and an article was published on Qantas in flight magazine.
Imagine never having seen the ocean, heard the waves against the beach, collected shells or searched in rockpools for marine life – it’s a quintessential, Australian experience, a right of passage for so many of the nation’s children. Yet for the Indigenous children of the Mutitjulu School, within the boundaries of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, this was not their experience.
They have never seen the sea. This is why the first Kids To Coast journey to the Gold Coast 2011 was just so important – it was their first real experience of seeing and touching the sea and a learning journey into the ocean world. Since the KTC Mutitjulu initiatives began, the school has seen improved attendance rates and academic results.
